On the outside, Singapore looks like a very prosperous and thriving country, where most of the people who live here are wealthy. However, that's just not the case. Based on reports, it has been estimated that approximately 26 percent of Singaporeans live in poverty and rely on money from charities to buy basic necessities. Singapore is ranked as the most expensive city to live in based on the most recent statistics. This would of course mean that people would need a larger sum of money as compared to other countries to buy groceries, pay for electrify and utility bills etc. Singapore being the most expensive city to live in would of course mean that more people would live in poverty in Singapore. Although we do not see beggars that often on streets as compared to other countries such as Thailand and Vietnam, beggars can be found in Singapore. The number of beggars in Singapore fluctuates every year and but it has been increasing for the past years. Begging is an offence in Singapore . I believe that Singaporeans in financial distress do not have to beg. They can approach the Community Development Councils, Family Service Centres or grassroots organisations for help. In addition, there are many voluntary welfare organisations, religious and civic organisations that provide assistance to the needy. Once they accept help from charities, they will be able to be more financially stable and will at least have enough money to buy the basic necessities. There are also financial assistant schemes which helps the underprivileged to pay subsidized school fees and have enough money to buy books and uniforms. If the underprivileged can have better education, they will not end up as beggars and can at least have a stable job with income. They can then escape the outcome of being in poverty.
