Sarah's Reflection ( 5 )

Remembering LKY [ZIQIU'S BLOGWORK]

WHAT WE HAVE LEARNT ABOUT TANG DYNASTY'S GOLDEN ERA?
[art & culture

  • Paintings, e.g. landscape paintings and mountain-water paintings are not to reproduce exactly the appearance of nature but rather to grasp an EMOTION//ATMOSPHERE so as to catch the "rhythm" of nature.
  • Pottery was exported to Arabia where it was highly priced. Chinese pottery during the Tang dynasty made significant advances.
  • For poetry, its art flourished during the Tang dynasty. Poetry became an integral part of the Chinese culture. People who wished to pass the state/imperial exams had to study poetry.
WHAT MAKES THE TANG DYNASTY THE GOLDEN ERA?

These productions can be traded as they are valued by many other countries. There is a lot of interaction between the Chinese and people of other cultures. The Tang people were prosperous and content. The arts flourished during this era.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNT ABOUT MR LEE KUAN YEW

He has led Singapore from a third-world fishing village to a cosmopolitan metropolis, an economy hub buzzing with activity everyday all thanks to his leadership. He has made Singaporeans prosperous and thanks to Mr Lee Kuan Yew's bilingual programme and racial equality mindset, we have become appreciative of the arts and cultures of other people, allowing the arts to flourish in Singapore.

HOW CAN SINGAPORE BE SEEN AT ITS OWN VERSION OF THE "GOLDEN AGE"?

  • People are content with their lives.
  • Different arts and cultures flourish in Singapore and we Singaporeans appreciate and embrace them.
  • Singapore is flourishing in prosperity.
  • There is racial equality.
  • We are a first-world metropolis.

CID reflection 4

This is how my group grouped all the paper cut- outs into different categories. We sorted them into four categories -Economic, Overseas relationship, environmental, and country growth.

         China has made successful joint ventures in China such as Suzhou industrial park, Sino- Singapore Tian Jin Eco-City and capital land malls. This marks how fast China is as a developing country. China has became a country that has powers and ranks 2nd in terms of GDP. By opening up their country for trade, it allows them to trade with other countries goods that they make. It also allows more foreign investors to enter the country freely. This allowed China to earn profit and this is the point of time where China was getting stronger and stronger. However, China had a population of 1.4 billion people, thus despite being a strong and independent country, the China citizen have very low pays due to the over population in China. Due to this factor, the income gap between the rich and poor is widening and this causes unequal opportunities among the peoples starting from young. For example, a child in a rich family can get all the schooling that he or she needs. However, a child in the poor family will be struggling to pay school fees or even trying to earn money to help the family. Overall, China had become one of the top few countries and it may pose threat to Singapore.
        Local talents in Singapore might go to China as their companies have asked if they wanted to go to China for business talks. Obviously, as the pay we receive will increase, people will be going to China as the products there are also affordable to us. Singapore will be losing local talents have all immigrated to China, thus, this might be a possible threat to Singapore.

Zi Qiu's Reflection

ZIQIU'S REFLECTION :D:

After last week's activity, where we were told to classify different situations into either Opportunities, Threats or None, I have definitely learnt a lot! I am also very amazed by China's accomplishments over the past years. China has seen an unprecedented economic growth over the last two decades.

{❃}

China has a huge population of 1.4 million people. This is an opportunity, as Singapore can hire people there who do not have jobs to work in Singapore, as foreign talent or workers.

{❃}

China also has a great land mass. This means a lot more space for office buildings, residential areas, infrastructure, etc. Hence, there is more free space for economic activities to be conducted, boosting China's economy. This is a threat, as more people will go to China where there is huge sufficient space to work and build factories etc, and thus, Singapore will lose business opportunities.

{❃}

China is endowed with natural resources, like coal, natural gas and steel. This can be an opportunity as we can buy these natural resources from them.

{❃}

China's corporate tax rate is one of the lowest tax rates in the world. This will attract foreign investors to come to invest. This can be both a threat and an opportunity. We can go to China and invest in their businesses. As a threat, more investors will choose to go to China for investing rather than Singapore. This will cause our economy to suffer.

{❃}

Chinese exports are relatively cheaper as well. Less countries are importing from countries like USA and even Americans are importing from China. This will be a threat to Singapore, as we may lose business opportunities, resulting in economy downfall.

Thank you for reading! =)

Sarah's Reflection ( 4 )

Even though I missed this lesson for competition, I still understood what Ms Huang taught through my group members. They were given small rectangular paper and they need to identify it under environment, global, position, social and economy. After pasting each paper under its correct heading, they then label it under Opportunity, Threat and None. After looking through the sheet of paper, I was amazed by China's accomplish. For example, under the social category, "Mandarin has become the most popular foreign language for students in many countries." This is an opportunity as more student have the chance to learnt mandarin leading to more common language between one another and communication will be easier in future. From the position category, "China is the largest and fastest developing economy." This is a threat as China will be overtake USA economy in a few more years to come. I think the lesson was interesting as from this category activity, I better understand and learnt that more of China's accomplish. In daily lesson, I will not learn this knowledge about China, only CID lesson and this is what makes CID lesson unique and enjoyable.

Shin Young's Reflection ( 3 )

The econmic growth recorded in China last year has been the lowest among all the years. It has also been recorded that the economic growth is becoming lower and lower over the years. Lower China growth will have a an adverse on its trade partners especially in Asia. Many products are made in china. Hence, many countries depends on China to make products as China manufacture products in a cheaper price.
For example, the Suzhou Industrial Park in China is a park made by China and Singapore when Chinese delegations visited Singapore in the 1980s. The Chinese visitors were eager to learn modern management methods, while Singapore was also planning Economic Regionalisation, which focused on overseas investment. In 1992, the idea of developing a modern industrial township with Singapore experience was broached. Through many processes, the Suzhou Industrial Park was developed.
